In 1972, John Fogerty left Creedence Clearwater Revival and their label, Fantasy Records. After he released his hit solo album Centerfield (1985), label head Saul Zaentz of Fantasy Records sued Fogerty for plagiarizing himself. Zaentz claimed that the single “The Old Man Down the Road” infringed upon “Run Through the Jungle,” a song that he had originally recorded with CCR under contract with Fantasy Records in 1970. Though he was not found guilty, it’s pretty novel that Fogerty was sued for sounding too much like himself!
In addition to playing the built-in instruments, you can also use the aQWERTYon as a MIDI controller for any DAW or notation program. Just set the input to the IAC bus (Windows users will need to install MidiOX before this will work.)

Before the SM7b became the quintessential radio microphone, the RE-20 was the go-to microphone for broadcasters. Also a large diaphragm dynamic microphone, the RE-20 features an extended frequency range that beefs up vocals with extra bass. A built-in high-pass filter helps prevent muddiness and maintain intelligibility, while the fixed cardioid pickup pattern helps eliminate room noise.

Whether you’re recording yourself or someone else, you’ll save time in the long run by getting lots and lots of takes. The most obvious reason for this is that musicians typically need a couple of run-throughs to start feeling comfortable and confident. But you also need to give yourself as many options as possible for splicing things together during the editing process, so you don’t have to go back in and record “punch-ins.” Re-recording is a time-waster; recording songs more than once the first time is a life-saver.

Solution: Look for shows that match your vibe and set list. If you only have twenty minutes of music, it’s probably not time to headline, but you can definitely take part in a showcase! If there isn’t one available, create your own or hit up some open mics! If you feel you’re totally ready to go, tighten up your online presence and start reaching out to venues and promoters. If you’re new to gigging, have a support team around to keep you from panicking over broken guitar strings, and to evaluate shows and help you strengthen your skills as a performer.
The ability to move up and down the neck of a guitar and understand what your available notes are in any given fret, is something that many guitarists struggle with well into their careers. It takes an effort to commit oneself to learning where all of the notes are and the patterns they create, but that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult to pick up this skill.
In summing up (ha!), phase is not just a potential problem in audio engineering. It’s actually one of the essential components of sound alteration. We’ve only touched on some of the most basic theory and techniques here. It will serve a budding engineer well to dive even deeper.
Another idea when crafting your narrative is to tie in your interests and passions. How do your interests shape who you are as an artist and the decisions you make?
