If you know you’ll have Tuesday nights free, then take that opportunity to call it a “music-making night.” Or if you have early mornings open, schedule that time for your songwriting sessions.

Dean Olivet received a Music BA in Duluth, MN, but he’s more proud of his French Horn Trophy, Jug Band Trophy, and his plaque that reads “Best Musical Act at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.” He has fun putting out recordings of his music, but these days he finds making videos about other people’s music to be just as fun. He keeps a record of his guitar curriculum online for a quick reference when he spaces out and can’t think of anything to teach his students.

Many microphones also feature built-in “roll off” switches, which filter out unused bass frequencies to prevent unwanted noise. Another common feature is a pad, which lowers the input volume of the microphone. This can be very useful when dealing with particularly boisterous speakers who tend to clip the microphone even at low gain levels.

Producers will use this technique when they have a double chorus in their hands. If the second half of that double chorus will also be the final chorus, it can be a challenge to keep the energy at peak level. Paul Weinstein, aka Chipocrite, is a chiptune musician who uses original Nintendo Game Boys, often accompanied by guitar, bass, drums, and other instruments, to create complex audio masterpieces. He has performed at numerous festivals and conventions, including the Vans Warped Tour, Blip Festival, MAGFest, and AnimeNEXT; provided soundtracks for commercials as well as video games and online videos; and released three EPs in addition to his full-length album, Wordplay, in December 2014. He is currently working on the soundtrack for “EarthNight,” a rogue-like runner game coming soon to several devices. Paul is the instructor for Soundfly’s free Chiptune Crash Course series.
